The dance replicates the gliding movement of the Bakasi. Dinagat takes its name from the Filipino word for sea, 'dagat' The festival celebrates fishing and the bounties of the sea. It is also aimed at instilling a deep respect for marine life, awareness of the need to protect fragile marine resources, and to inspire conservation efforts from local, national, and international organisations.
The festival is Cordova's is celebrated every August to honour the sea, which provides the town's livelihood and contributes significantly to the region's heritage and history. The annual festival was started last August 14, 1999. Showcasing the livelihood and fishing culture of the Cordovanhons which is abundant of rich marine resources and pride for Cordova eel of Bakasi.
Key events and activities include the Bakasi Dance, a traditional ritual in which dancers imitate the graceful gliding motion of the bakasi, a saltwater eel found in abundance in the region; a bakasi race; and a cooking contest in which competitors vie for the title with various bakasi recipes.
